A Slice of New York in LA
For their latest collection, Kith sought to transport the essence of Queens to the heart of Los Angeles. With the vibrant culture of Flushing Meadows Park as the muse, Kith invited Institute to reimagine a space at Maxfield LA that would pay homage to this iconic New York landmark while resonating with the West Coast’s artistic sensibilities.
A Monumental Tribute
At the center of our design, we crafted a 10-foot replica of the Unisphere, meticulously constructed from steel, anchoring the room as a symbol of Queens’ legacy. This wasn’t just a nod to the borough’s history; it was a powerful statement of unity. Around the perimeter, the national flags of countries impacted by recent travel bans fluttered in solidarity—a quiet yet poignant gesture reflecting the diversity that defines both Queens and Kith.
Designing a Legacy
Our approach blended the past with the present, deconstructing elements of Flushing Meadows Park to create a space that was both artful and reflective. Subtle cues—like patches of grass and the gentle suggestion of water—invoked the spirit of the old World’s Fair site, reinterpreted to fit within the sleek, modern gallery setting of Maxfield LA.
Crafting the Experience
The project encompassed creative direction, experience design, stage design, and brand strategy. By weaving together these elements, we helped Kith create a space that not only celebrated the collection but also bridged the gap between New York and Los Angeles, bringing a piece of Queens to the West Coast with authenticity and artistry.
